Child Nutrition Programs: Income Eligibility Guidelines
FNS has announced the annual adjustments to the Income Eligibility Guidelines to be used in determining eligibility for free and reduced-price meals and free milk for the period from July1, 2023 through June 30, 2024. These guidelines are used by schools, institutions, and facilities participating in the National School Lunch Program (and Commodity School Program), School Breakfast Program, Special Milk Program for Children, Child and Adult Care Food Program and Summer Food Service Program.
FDA Provides Guidance on Protein Quality Studies for Infant Formula
FDA has issued draft guidance to manufacturers of infant formula and laboratories conducting testing on infant formula to help them in the design, conduct, evaluation, and reporting of Protein Efficiency Ratio rat bioassay studies. Sufficient biological quality of protein is one of many factors FDA considers in evaluating a new infant formula submission.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Announces Key Staff Appointments
USDA announced the names of individuals who will hold senior staff positions in Washington, D.C.:
- Cathy Cochran has been appointed Director of the Office of Communications
- Mia Mayberry has been promoted to Chief of Staff to the Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs
- Michele Altemus has been appointed Senior Advisor for External Communications with the Natural Resources Conservation Service
Child Nutrition Programs: Revisions to Nutrition Standards
FNS has proposed long-term school nutrition standards based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, and feedback the USDA received from child nutrition program stakeholders. Notably, this rulemaking proposes new added sugars standards for the school lunch and breakfast programs. It also proposes gradually reducing school meal sodium limits.
FSIS Notice on Sampling Instructions and Testing for Chicken Parts and NRTE Comminuted Poultry
The FSIS notice informs inspection program personnel (IPP) that they are to collect rinsate in an additional container for chicken parts samples. The FSIS labs will conduct additional testing of product submitted under this sampling project. Additionally, this notice informs IPP that FSIS labs will also generate additional testing results for both comminuted chicken samples and comminuted turkey samples.
U.S. Codex Meeting on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification
The U.S. Codex Office is sponsoring a public meeting on March 23, 2023 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. EST. The objective of the public meeting is to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft United States (U.S.) positions to be discussed at the 26th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems (CCFICS) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which will meet in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia from May 1-5, 2023. CPSC Proposed Safety Standard on Button Cell and Coin Batteries and Consumer Products Containing Such Batteries
As required by Reese’s Law, to eliminate or adequately reduce the risk of injury from ingestion of button cell or coin batteries by children 6 years old and younger, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has proposed a rule to establish performance requirements for battery compartments on consumer products that contain, or are designed to use, one or more button cell or coin batteries. The proposed rule also requires warning labels on the packaging of button cell or coin batteries, as well as on the packaging, battery compartments, and accompanying instructions and manuals of consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries.
