ITC Rules Increased Blueberry Imports Do Not Injure U.S. GrowersIn a unanimous vote on February 11, the International Trade Commission determined that fresh, chilled, or frozen blueberries are not being imported into the United States in such increased quantities as to be a substantial cause of serious injury, or the threat of serious injury, to the domestic industry. As a result the vote, the investigation will end, and the Commission will not recommend a remedy to the President. The Commission will submit its report containing its injury determination and the basis for it to the President by March 29, 2021. More information here. CSPI Petitions FSIS on Salmonella and Campylobacter StandardsThe petition requests that FSIS initiate rulemaking to: 1) establish enforceable finished product standards for Salmonella types of greatest public health concern and Campylobacter and 2) require poultry establishments to identify and control food safety risks within their supply chain. FDA Moves Into Second Phase of Artificial Intelligence for Seafood ImportsFDA has launched the second phase of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Imported Seafood Pilot program. The pilot is scheduled to run from February 1, 2021 through July 31, 2021, and the agency does not expect any significant service interruptions to industry and seafood import processors. The pilot is designed to enhance and improve the agency’s ability to quickly and efficiently identify imported seafood products that may pose a threat to public health. More details here. |

FDA Updated Interstate Certified Shellfish Shippers ListThe latest list is available here. Codex Committee Meetings Announced on Herbs and Spices and Methods of Analysis and TestingThe herbs and spices meeting will be held on March 29. The objective of the public meeting is to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions to be discussed at the 5th Session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which will convene virtually April 26-30, 2021. Topics on the agenda include: oregano, ginger, basil, cloves, saffron, fruits and berries, chili peppers, nutmeg and paprika. More details and a link to register may be found here. The methods of analysis and sampling meeting will be held on April 13, 2021. The objective of the public meeting is to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions to be discussed at the 41st Session of the Codex Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CCMAS) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in Budapest, Hungary, May 17-21, 2021.
