APHIS and FSIS Reopen Comment Period for Proposal on Movement of GMO AnimalsThe APHIS advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) would create regulations for APHIS to conduct a safety assessment of animals subject to the Federal Meat Inspection Act or Poultry Products Inspection Act that have been modified or developed using genetic engineering that may increase the animal’s susceptibility to pests or diseases of livestock, including zoonotic diseases, or ability to transmit the same. The FSIS ANPRM would create regulations for FSIS to conduct a pre-slaughter food safety assessment to ensure that the slaughter and processing of certain animals modified or developed using genetic engineering would not result in a product that is adulterated or misbranded. FDA Update on Hispanic-Style Fresh and Soft Cheese OutbreakFDA is advising industry and the public to not sell, eat or serve recalled Queso Fresco, Quesillo (Oaxaca, string cheese) or Requeson (ricotta) cheeses from El Abuelito Cheese, Inc. AMS Revises Grade Standards for Frozen Corn on the Cob, Proposes Changes for WatermelonThe Extra Fancy and Extra Standard nomenclature is eliminated for frozen corn on the cob among other things. AMS is proposing the limit the tolerances for defects and adjust the weight standards to reflect current marketing trends for smaller watermelons. FNS Extends School Meal Program Through SummerUSDA has announced the nationwide extension of several waivers that allow all children to continue to receive nutritious meals this summer when schools are out of session. These flexibilities are now available through Sept. 30, 2021. |
