FDA Outlines Strategy to Resume In-Person InspectionsFDA has issued a report titled, “Resiliency Roadmap for FDA Inspectional Oversight,” outlining the agency’s inspectional activities during the COVID-19 pandemic and its detailed plan to move toward a more consistent state of operations, including the FDA’s priorities related to this work going forward. FDA to Conduct Consumer Research on Healthy Symbol for FoodsFDA is issuing a procedural notice on the preliminary quantitative consumer research it plans to conduct on symbols that could be used in the future to convey the nutrient content claim “healthy.” The FDA is conducting the research in conjunction with the development of a proposed rule the FDA intends to later publish that would update when manufacturers may use the “healthy’ nutrient content claim on food packages. The symbol would be a stylized representation of the nutrient content claim. The update to the definition and creation of a symbol for the “healthy” nutrient content claim are part of the FDA’s Nutrition Innovation Strategy (NIS). The NIS is intended to reduce the burden of nutrition-related chronic diseases, which are experienced at a disproportionately higher rate by communities of color. FDA Releases Retail Food Protection Tool for RegulatorsFDA has released the Retail Food Program Standards “Self-Assessment – Audit Verification Summary & Gap Analysis tool (SAVA tool). The tool is now located on the Retail Food Protection, Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards (VNRFRPS) website. Users can access the SAVA tool by visiting the website and following the “Information About Enrolling”. The tool, developed by the FDA, assists enrolled state, local, tribal and territorial jurisdictions in monitoring and tracking their progress with the VNRFRPS. The VNRFRPS provide a systematic approach, through a continuous improvement process, to enhancing retail food regulatory programs. The VNRFRPS also defines what constitutes a highly effective and responsive program for the regulation of foodservice and retail food establishments. The FDA recognizes the benefits associated with the SAVA tool, although it does not replace the FDA Form 3958 FDA National Registry Report. The SAVA tool is designed to assist enrolled jurisdictions in tracking progress towards meeting one or more of the Retail Program Standards. It also includes an instruction tab to help users understand how to document advancement toward their goals. Interstate Shellfish Shippers List UpdateThe latest list is available here. |
