FDA Seeks Public Input on Vaping Dangers
FDA has opened a docket to obtain data and information related to the use of vaping products that are associated with e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI). This request for information responds to direction from Congress to gather information from the public that could help identify and evaluate additional steps the FDA could take to address the recent lung injuries associated with the use of vaping products and to help prevent similar occurrences in the future. FDA is seeking unpublished data or information related to the use of vaping products that are associated with recent lung injuries including information on specific chemicals, compounds, ingredients or combinations of ingredients that when inhaled or aerosolized, may be associated with EVALI symptoms, as well as product design and potential ways to prevent consumers from modifying or adding substances to these products that are not intended by the manufacturers. FDA Reopens Comment Period Related to General Principles for Food Standards of Identity Modernization
FDA is reopening the comment period on a 2005 proposed rule to establish a set of general principles to use when considering whether to establish, revise or eliminate a food standard of identity. While the original proposed rule was jointly published with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), FDA is only seeking comments on the agency’s specific aspects of the proposed rule, including 13 general principles for food standards modernization. The FDA and USDA will continue to engage on standard of identity modernization.
FDA is reopening the comment period now due to changes that have occurred in manufacturing, food technology, market trends and nutrition science. Stakeholders and the public have also indicated that new information and data should be solicited, including in the comments related to the public meeting on the Nutrition Innovation Strategy, held in July 2018, and a public meeting on horizontal approaches to food standards of identity modernization, held in September 2019. FDA Withdraws Outdated Compliance Policy Guides for Animal Food and Drugs
FDA has withdrawn 27 Compliance Policy Guides (CPGs) pertaining to a variety of animal food and drug-related issues. The CPGs were withdrawn, in most cases, because they were obsolete (in conflict with, or not reflective of FDA’s current thinking) or replaced by more recent agency policies including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
