FDA Issues Final Guidance for Industry on Reconditioning Fish and Fishery Products by Segregation
FDA issued a final guidance titled “Reconditioning Fish and Fishery Products by Segregation: Guidance for Industry.” This final guidance:
- Clarifies the steps that owners of fish and fishery products, or their representatives, can take to segregate non-violative products from products adulterated with pathogens, unlawful animal drugs, scombrotoxin (histamine) or decomposition, to demonstrate compliance with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
- Recommends information that industry should include in reconditioning by segregation proposals.
CBP Releases Draft Global Business Identifier Proposal

USDA to Reestablish of the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection
USDA intends to reestablish the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection and its charter. The purpose of the Committee is to provide advice to the Secretary of Agriculture concerning State and Federal programs with respect to meat and poultry inspection, food safety, and other matters that fall within the scope of the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Poultry Products Inspection Act.
USDA Concurs on Risk Designation for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy for Ireland
USDA is advising the public of the agency’s preliminary concurrence with the World Organization for Animal Health’s (OIE) bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) risk designation for Ireland. The OIE recognizes Ireland as being of negligible risk for BSE.
FSIS Notice on Import Reinspection Activities Related to South American Fresh Meat Inspection Certificates
The notice reissues the contents in FSIS Notice 14-21 that continues to provide instructions for inspection program personnel at official import inspection establishments to follow when conducting import reinspection activities related to the use of fresh meat inspection certificates for fully cooked beef skeletal muscle meat from select countries in South America.
AMS Revises United States Potato Board Membership and Assessment Methods
This rule changes the approved data sources used to determine the number of National Potato Promotion Board seats, expands payment methods used to remit assessments to include electronic submission, and updates the table of Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States codes and assessment rates for imported potatoes and potato products.
FDA Holds Webinar on the Foodborne Outbreak Response Improvement Plan
Deputy FDA Commissioner Frank Yiannas and FDA experts across agency’s human foods program explained and answered questions about the plan with the goal of raising awareness, enhancing understanding, and building support on April 13. Watch the recording here.
FDA CORE Outbreak Investigation Status Update
This week’s updates are:
- A new outbreak (reference #1057) has been added to the table: Listeria monocytogenes in a food that has not been identified yet.
- The adverse event reports for the investigation (reference #1060) increased to 38 reports. Traceback has been initiated, and sample collection and analysis has been initiated as well.
- For the Listeria monocytogenes outbreak in a not yet identified food (reference #1040), an on-site inspection has been initiated and sample collection and analysis has also been initiated.
FSIS Updates Lists of Foreign Establishments Eligible to Export to U.S.
