FDA Acceptable Seafood Names Guidance
The updated guidance provides information on the acceptable market name, common name, scientific name, and vernacular name of seafood species sold in the United States.
FDA and Stop Foodborne Illness to Co-Host Webinar on Facing Food Safety Challenges
FDA announced the eighth in the ongoing series of webinars exploring food safety culture taking place on September 13, 2023, from 12 noon to 1:00 pm ET. The webinar series Collaborating on Culture in the New Era of Smarter Food Safety is in partnership with Stop Foodborne Illness, a non-profit public health organization.
USDA Announces Major Partnerships in Africa
USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Jenny Lester Moffitt announced new partnerships to enhance plant and animal health at the Africa Food Systems Forum in Tanzania this week.
Potato Research and Promotion Plan; Changes to Board Membership and Administrative Committee
This proposed rule would implement recommendations from the National Potato Promotion Board to change its membership and organization by revising the formula used to determine the number of producer and importer seats on the Board, reducing the maximum number of importer seats on the Board, and indefinitely suspending the Administrative Committee. In addition to these Board-recommended changes, USDA would make several non-substantive changes to clarify the start of the term of office for Board members and modernize the Board’s procedures.
FSIS Petitions Submitted by Animal Partisan and Perdue
The Animal Partisan petition requests that FSIS issue a notice to convey that: State government officials are not categorically preempted from enforcing state anti-cruelty laws by the Federal Meat Inspection Act, the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, or the Poultry Products Inspection Act, and FSIS personnel should cooperate with state government officials in the enforcement of state anti-cruelty laws and improve clarity and frequency of communication to those officials.
The Perdue petition requests that FSIS conduct rulemaking to define separate “free range” and “pasture raised” claims for meat and poultry products. The petition also requests that FSIS update its guidance on claims related to living/raising conditions to ensure that the claims align with consumer expectations.
FSIS Ante-Mortem and Post-Mortem Poultry Inspection Directive Revised
This directive instructs the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) and offline and online inspection program personnel on how to perform ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection of poultry and how to inspect the conditions under which the birds are processed. It also instructs IICs on how to make post-mortem dispositions for some poultry diseases and how to document these dispositions in the Public Health Information System. This directive has been updated to clarify duties for the IIC, to update instructions on avian leukosis dispositions, and to remove previous instructions on worker safety hazards. This directive is not implemented until September 18, 2023
