FSIS Best Practices for Controlling Retail Deli Listeria
The FSIS guideline provides information on steps that retailers can take to prevent certain ready-to-eat foods that are prepared or sliced in retail delicatessens (delis) and consumed in the home, such as deli meats and deli salads, from becoming contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This guideline relates to FSIS regulations in 9 CFR parts 303, 327, 381, 416, and 430.
Food Additive Petition Filed for Chlorine Dioxide
FDA is announcing that they have filed a petition, submitted by PHM Brands, proposing that the food additive regulation for chlorine dioxide be amended to provide for an additional method for producing the additive.
USDA Final Rule on Preserving GIPSA Trust Benefits
This final rule revises the GIPSA regulations to provide instructions for livestock sellers who desire to preserve their interest in the statutory livestock dealer trust under the Packers and Stockyards Act. This rule adds procedures and timeframes for a livestock seller to notify the livestock dealer and the Secretary of Agriculture that the seller has not received full payment for livestock purchased by the dealer and that the seller intends to preserve its trust interests.
USDA Commits to Approximately $300 Million in Projects for Underserved Producers
USDA announced its selection of 50 projects for potential award, totaling approximately $300 million. These innovative projects will help improve access to land, capital, and markets for underserved farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners. The Increasing Land, Capital, and Market Access Program, is funded by the Inflation Reduction Act.
USDA, NASA Announce MOU
USDA and NASA signed a memorandum of understanding today strengthening the collaboration between the two agencies, including efforts to improve agricultural and Earth science research, technology, and agricultural management, and the application of science data and models to agricultural decision making.
FSIS Updates Directive on Safe and Suitable Ingredients
This directive provides inspection program personnel with the latest updates to the list of substances that may be used in the production of meat, poultry, and egg products. As a reminder, this directive no longer provides the complete listing of approved substances, On-Line Reprocessing and Off-Line Reprocessing Antimicrobial Intervention Systems. Instead, it only provides a list of the latest changes.
FSIS Revises Directive on Responsibilities in Dual Jurisdiction Establishments
This directive provides instruction to FSIS inspection program personnel (IPP) about their roles and responsibilities regarding inspection, verification, documentation of findings, reporting and enforcement actions in establishments that operate under the jurisdiction of both FSIS and the FDA. FSIS is revising this directive to reflect the updated Memorandum of Understanding between FSIS and FDA and to provide instructions to IPP in establishments that harvest cells for cell-cultured meat and poultry food products.
FDA Consumer Notice: “Food Safety is the Main Ingredient to a Successful Cookout”
“Recent USDA consumer behavior studies have shown that individuals don’t always properly wash their hands or use a food thermometer,” said USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Emilio Esteban. “Show your family and friends that you’re a true grill master by cooking food to a safe temperature and washing your hands after handling raw meat and poultry.”
Ensure your food is safe to eat this Fourth of July by following these food safety steps:
- Clean
- Separate
- Cook
- Chill
FTC Puts Online Marketplaces on Notice About Their Responsibilities Under the New INFORM Consumers Act
The Federal Trade Commission has sent letters to 50 online marketplaces nationwide notifying them about their obligation to comply with the new Integrity, Notification, and Fairness in Online Retail Marketplaces for Consumers Act – or the INFORM Consumers Act – as soon as it takes effect on June 27. “The INFORM Consumers Act requires online marketplaces to protect consumers from counterfeit, unsafe, and stolen goods by verifying their high-volume third-party sellers’ identities, and making it easier for consumers to report suspicious marketplace activity,” said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
